UNDATED (AP) - The damage assessment continues today after
thunderstorms and tornadoes hit the upper Midwest over the weekend.
At least eight people died, including a two-year-old in
Minnesota and seven people in Iowa.
Several homes and a high school in Parkersburg, Iowa, were
wrecked.
The Iowa storm hit just after 5 p.m. yesterday and dealt heavy
damage to the town of Parkersburg. The National Weather Service has
confirmed that a tornado struck the town of about 1,000 residents.
Iowa Homeland Security administrator Dave Miller says five
people were killed in Parkersburg and two were from nearby New
Hartford. At least 50 injuries were reported.
Parkersburg is 80 miles northeast of Des Moines.
In Minnesota, authorities say a 2-year-old child is dead after
severe thunderstorms packing large hail and possible tornadoes hit
the suburban St. Paul area.
