MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Dauphin Island property owners have reached
a settlement with the federal government that would give the island
$1.5 million to restore beaches left bare by chronic erosion.
Federal court records show the settlement was reached in a
lawsuit the Dauphin Island Property Owners Association filed in
2000. The lawsuit blamed erosion and land loss on dredging by the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Mobile ship channel.
The lawsuit claimed that sand naturally flowing east-to-west on
waves was trapped in the channel and prevented from replenishing
the island's beaches.
The president of the property owners association, Bill Harper,
said in a letter to members Tuesday that the settlement will allow
projects to move forward to restore the island.

Geese. I guess because it has been a slow hurricane season so far that they think it is worth rebuilding. Come on! As soon as they fix it I can guarantee that is when we will start getting some action. That is if they are going to go straight away to the restoring phase. Not very bright if they do it in the middle of hurricane season. Actually not very bright to do at all. JMO.

It’s a “barrier island”, it has and will continue to “move”, and change through time. It always has. Check old maps of the coastal area, and you’ll see that Dauphin island and all the other “barrier islands” around it have changed dramatically over the years. A great place to see these maps is at the Fort Morgan museum.

If the sands move from East to West, re-reoute the channel to the west side. All islands to the immediate west are uninhabited.

Yes, they thought it through and they also have been watching as money has been thrown at this same problem over and over and over and over.  When will it ever be enough.  Next time there is the least bit of a disturbance in the gulf, it will be done again.

They should stop dredging the ship channel and let it fill in and just close the docks. I mean, who needs the jobs anyway? Do these people even think this stuff through or do they care?

It sounds to me like the federal government accepts responsibility. The Corps of Engineers had caused erosion and lack of replenishing sand on the island due to their actions.

Maybe, we should demand that the Army Corps of Engineers be responsible for ALL of their screw ups?

What a waste of money. Look at the school systems in both Mobile and Baldwin County. That is where money is needed. This will be money washed away….AGAIN.

Makes sense to me that the Federal governement would have to pick up the tab to make your beaches pretty again.  I am from the Mobile area and I am personally getting sick and tired of all of the cost associated with Dauphin Island Issues.  Either enjoy it as it is or here’s a thought, MOVE!!!!!
