MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama is 100 percent free of drought
for the first time in three years.
The U.S. Drought Monitor report, released Thursday, marks the
first time since March 2006 that the state has been completely free
of abnormally dry conditions. Much of Alabama was classified as
abnormally dry two weeks ago, with some areas still in drought.
But another front of rainy weather ended that
State Climatologist John Christy said it appears Alabama has
emerged from one of the worst droughts of the last 1,000 years.
Christy said the drought that affected north and central Alabama
since 2007 is similar to the one that dried up the Black Warrior
River in 1839 and one that struck in 1542.
He said the state should take advantage of this year's rain to
store water for the future.
