ADPH also reports Alabama hospitals have treated 148 heat-related cases so far this month. State Health Officer Dr. Donald Williamsson says he is most concerned with people who live in homes without air conditioning. The public is being asked to make frequent checks on their relatives and friends; especilly the sick and elderly.
ADPH is recommending Alabamians follow these measure to prevent heat-related problems:
-During the heat of the day individuals should not over-exert themselves and should take frequent breaks in an air-conditioned area.
-Drink more fluids, and avoid beverages containing alcohol or caffeine.
-When temperatures are extreme, seek air-conditioned places.
-Take cool showers or baths, and reduce or eliminate strenuous activities.
-Never leave pets or people in a parked vehicle.
Dr. Williamson says people aged 65 or older are most susceptible to heat related illnesses. He says the risk for heat-related problems and possible death may increase among people using certain drugs and diuretics.
