This picture was taken 7/31/09 at 7:45 pm pointed due EAST. We were just wondering what caused this. Never seen anything like it. Editors Note: This fanning out of light is called crepuscular rays. As described it would be opposite the direction of the sun as anticrepuscular rays. These form when distant clouds block light and allow it through only in spots, making the light appear as spotlights.

On Sat. 7/4 at 5:42 here in Pace, Fla. the colorful phenomena I saw appeared to be erupting out of the top of a cumulonimbus formation. It flowed upward and curved to the left (southeast). The sun was filtering through the formation and cast a multicolored shadow on top of the thunderstorm. The event was accompanied by several lightning bolts from the top of the cloud which I was unfortunately unable to capture in the photo. The whole experience lasted about 10 minutes. Circumhorizon arc above the horizon and a halo around the sun above. Both of these form in the ice crystals of cirrus clouds. The circumhorizon arc is also known as a circumhorizontal arc and the erroneous nickname is fire rainbow but it has nothing to do with fire and it's not a rainbow!
