Law enforcement officials say they're seeing more traffic accidents caused by people not paying attention. One thing that is taking drivers' eyes off the road is texting.
13 states now have laws against texting while driving and 17 more are considering them.
But some say what we really need is a federal ban -- making it illegal in every state.
Law enforcement officials say texting at the wheel is one of the most dangerous driving habits -- but it's also a hard habit to break.
Some argue that drinking and driving is against the law because it impairs your judgement and slows your reflexes -- texting does the same thing.
According to a 2008 AAA market research study: 1 in 7 drivers admits sending text messages in the driver's seat.
Among 18-to-24 year olds it's even higher: 1 of every 2 drivers text and drive.
Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida do NOT have laws banning texting and driving but bills have been proposed during the 2009 legislative session in all three states to make texting and driving illegal.

WEB WEDNESDAY:
What do you think?
Should there be a federal law against texting and driving or should it be left up to each individual state?

Yeah well one good deterrent for parents could be to watch that show Nanny 911. I mean wow, the kids on their should be a warning to all parents that if you do not nip it in the butt, from day one then things can and will get out of control. Kids spitting on adults, calling them the F word on one this kid was even stabbing his mom with pens and pencils. My daughter has already tried to go through the hitting phase, wacked me one good time on the leg because she wanted some juice and I would not get up right then when she wanted it. Needless to say that has not happened again.

Yeah i was in 6th grade the first and last time i got detention was for chewing gum in reading class, but i got 3 paddlings throught middle school. DHR is a joke. I am the same way with manners, i would get the evil eye from my dad, even being as old as I am now, if I didnt say sir or mam minimay, you sound liek your doing an awesome job with your little girl, if only some people took more pride in raising there kids as you do, its obvious you want someone to look at your child one day and see what a great person she is because she had a great mom who was a good influence.

Yeah I know I am always worried that since I live in apartments that someone is going to call them just because they hear how loud my daughter cries when I have to put her in time out. I mean it is ear piercing. I mean if you even have any kind of a stern tone with her forget it she is done. I have had neighbors knock on my door and ask if everything is alright cause she sounds upset. Of course she is upset she is not getting her own way. I mean disciplining a 2 year old is not easy, they get aggravated at the drop of a hat. One minute she will be screaming at the top of her lungs and the next she will be jumping up and down and clapping. If anyone needs to be checked on I think it would be me! lol, j/k.

The switch or wooping never hurt anyone but there pride. I don’t know about anyone else but if i got in trouble at school, I new i had to face my dad when i got home!  I’ve never been in trouble and alot of respect for my elders….DHR thats whats wrong with society.

Yup. Those darn switches. When I was in elementary school they had the paddle, too. You could either choose the paddle or after school detention. I never had that problem cause I never got in trouble in school. I think I only got detention once in middle school and that was because I was chewing gum. My parents always taught me yes mam and no mam and yes sir and no sir. I still say it today to just about everyone that looks my age or older, just a habit, then tell me I don’t have to call them that, but I figure I would want the same respect back from someone else’s kid, plus if I just keep saying I am sure that my daughter is going to make it a habit too.

Yeah and u had to go pick your own switch and we always picked the little ones and we never caught on that those hurt the worse. My sister has popped my nephews hand in the store and this lady asked her what did she call herself doing my sister said excuse me last i checked i gave birth to him and he is not going to come out in public and act up, and thsi lady wen ton this spill about how it damages there self asteem and blah blah and my sister said no it ensures that when he’s grown he will be a decent human being because he will learn there are consequences for his actions. Its one thing if your beating ur kid with a hanger or something but a pop on the hand or butt isnt going to harm anything, its going to teach them a lesson, and these complete strangers who feel it is there duty to intervein have serious problems, I got spankins as a child and so will my children. I didnt act up in school, and i didnt act up any where else. I love and respect my parents, elders, & authority figures

Yeah I know these days if someone sees you handle your kid in any kind of physical way whether it be a pop on the behind or grabbing their hand firmly, they look at you like you are a child abuser. I remember when I was younger and my mom and I were in a store and I was picking up stuff that I was not suppose to because it was glass, she grabbed my arm and gave me a firm pop on my behind. Of course I cried I was only like 5, but it was not because it necessarily hurt I was just embarrassed.  Well needless to say someone took down our plate number on the car and the next day DHR showed up on our door step claiming that someone saw my mother “beating” me in the store. After they realized what happened and saw that I had no marks on me to show any signs of her beating me they left. I think I have only had a whoopin like 4 or 5 times in my life, but that is all it took because I learned if I kept acting up I was going to keep getting them. I also remember the switch my grandma had. OUCH.

Yes it should be a federal law.  I got behind someone the other day texting and finally had to blow my horn so they would go at the green light, and she looked at me like whats your problem, I said get off the phone and drive!

OMG!! i know. kids these days are out of control cause the parents are letting other kids, most of the time older siblings, or the TV and video games raise there kids! I was in the dressign room at JCPenny’s friday and this little boy was running around the dressing room screaming at the top of his lungs for no reason and he was trying to climb under my door and his mom didnt do anything but say “Stop that Justin” I got dressed grabbed his hand and knocked on the door and said look, I dont have kids for a reason, you need to keep an eye on him or get a baby sister when you come shopping, and she looked at me like i was the one doing something wrong. My parents never listened to just our side of the story they got both sides and determined if we were lying or not and they knew when we were. Parents need to stop cursing there kids and take some responsibilty for the way they act, and PUNISH them. A good butt whoopin aint never hurt anyone.

Yeah I agree that all bus drivers are not like the one that I had, and yes a lot of the times kid’s are trying to get a rise out of the driver, like you stated I would never let a child disrespect me, that just is not going to happen. I have respect for the bus drivers that are out there dealing with some of these wild kids, cause a lot of kids these days just do not have respect. I do not know if the bus drivers I had is still doing bus routes. I hope not cause if she flipped out like that with us, imagine how she would react now, the kids are 10 times worse. I think that it is wise that they are starting to put cameras in all the buses now. Cause like you said the parent is more than likely to take up for their child, before taking some blame. I see some kids when I go to the store that are just out of control. I mean I have kids running past me a pushing me out of the way, pushing my buggy into something while I have my daughter in it. It is just insane!
