Rosepetal what I mean is in your situation something unforseen happened, but in their situation they did not even try to prepare, they are learning the hard way and hopefully they have learned a valuable lesson. If they had prepared and needed help I would already be down there.
Gotta go and update some files talk to ya later.
I’m all for fire extinguishers and have a couple here in the house and one that didn’t work. The gauge on it shows charged but you can’t get a weak puff out of it. After a couple of years replace them if you can. I’m saving this malfunctioning one as a reminder to me,“they don’t do you any good if you can’t use them”. They have different types so be sure to tell them for what kind of fire or fires you might have.
i agree carl, you never know until you ask. i just know what will be on my need list for the next storm, is plenty of fire extinquishers. i never thought about that until i saw it on one of the above stations. as far as the barrier island. i think people need to go back, it will help them to see and you never know they might find something that means a lot to them. at least they will be able to see for theirselves.
This is one of the big reasons a lot of people don’t evacuate, getting back in to your home to begin the clean up and save what you can. On the barrier Island I can understand not going back in, there’s nothing there, but for the rest they need to check for their residency in that area and let them start clean up and salvaging what they can, they don’t need to be told they can’t go home because it might be unsafe, life is unsafe at most times. It seems most everyone get to go into an area before the people living there.
The purpose of the circuit breaker is to trip when the current draw through it becomes greater than it’s rating and hopefully preventing over heating and a fire . I’ve seen a breaker or two get hot but never one burn but I guess anything is possible. All I’ve had go bad were open but if you got an arc big enough, say from lighting, I guess that would seal them closed so they wouldn’t trip. I was just wondering and asking questions is the way to learn.
carl, friday night when i was listening to one of the stations,. they said the restraunt fire was caused by a circuit breaker and the house fire. the more i think of it, i remember one time a circuit braker at the store had gone out and was very hot to the touch. its been so long ago, but i do believe the electrician said it could have caused a fire. i don’t know, but i decided to learn something and keep a fire extquinsher or two ready during a storm. that standby generator kicks in you never know.
You have me completely stumped Rosepetal. What is a circuit breaker fire? It’s probably something we call by different names I would guess. We’ve been in the habit for many years of flipping all the outside circuit breakers to the off position except for the refrigerator if we are going to be gone more than the day, turning the gas and water off also, I don’t like any surprises when I get back and since we don’t have homeowners insurance we have to be a little more careful than normal. If we are here I stand a pretty good chance of stopping fire or any other disaster in the making so i don’t leave home that much and don’t really have the desire to. I was just wondering what you refer to as a circuit breaker fire was.
sweetnsour, i understand what you mean but, i am still glad they are ok. yes to be alive is ok after that storm or any like katrina. where there is life there is hope. i do not need any help. i was pointing out how i seem to learn things about every storm. the circuit breakers was something i had not thought of. after katrina i purchased a standby generator for the house. lights come on automatically when power fails. i just never thought about a circuit breaker fire.
sweetnsour, i know you are right. a hard lesson is the best lesson. i know you would have been down there.
