Couple In I-65 Bridge Crash Engaged

Posted: Updated:
Mobile, AL - Tuesday night's crash brought a horrible end on what was supposed to be the ride home from a family road trip.

"Frankly we're fortunate there were no more fatalities," says personal injury lawyer Dean Waite.  I spoke with Arthur Lewis's attorney at the victim's home.  State Troopers say Lewis was at the wheel when the crash happened.  Lewis and the only person who died in the wreck, Debra Hartley, were engaged.

Troopers say Hartley and her three year old niece were thrown from the Ford Explorer--Hartley was killed.   The little girl was taken to the hospital from the highway and the other survivors were pulled from the water Tuesday night.  They have non-life-threatening injuries--but all are hurt both physically and emotionally.

“Couple of sisters and one of the sister's children in the car they had just been on family trip and were coming home,” says Waite.  Lewis got a lawyer after the crash--they're investigating whether a tire problem may have caused the accident.

“Our initial investigation is that there was some sort of tire de-treads but we're still investigating it at that point,” says Waite.  State troopers said Hartley was not wearing a seatbelt but attorney Dean Waite says they haven't gathered all the facts yet.

“There are all the time seat-belt failures so we have no idea at this point that all has to be examined.”
