New Airbus Workers Hired

New Airbus Workers Hired

Posted: Updated:
The number of Airbus employees for the Mobile Final Assembly Facility increased by 50-percent this week. 14 new workers began Monday, bringing the employment total to 42.

The new class of employees covers an array of aeronautic skills, from electricians to computer systems techs. All have previous aerospace experience.

Eleven of the 14 new workers are from Mobile or Baldwin Counties. For two, it's a chance to come home.

“It's a great opportunity, especially being from this area,” said Thomas Archer, who graduated from nearby B.C. Rain High School and recently left the U.S. Marine Corps.

“I'm coming home,” beamed Jane Shelton, a native of Lillian. Shelton had been working at Pratt-Whitney in Columbus, Georgia.

Two of the 14 new workers are moving to Mobile for a chance to work at the Airbus facility. Both hail from cities with strong a strong aerospace presence: Huntsville and Wichita.

Tracy Haggitt says she heard nothing but good things about the Airbus engineering facility in Wichita and jumped at the chance to come to mobile to work for the company.

“They have a great community atmosphere there,” said Haggitt. “I always wanted to be a part of that.”

Others say they are excited to be part of a brand new operation.

“To make history – first aircraft Airbus will make in America - I want to be part of the team and the experience,” said Arthur Balbastro who left another aerospace company in Mobile to join Airbus.

In September, the new workers will head to Hamburg, Germany to begin nine months of training at the Airbus facility there. Airbus officials say the hiring schedule in Mobile depends on the amount of training time necessary in Germany.

“We bring them in based on the position they have and how log their training needs to be,” said Jennifer Ogle, Airbus' Human Resources Director in Mobile.  “So the group that's here this week need to start in September in order to complete it in time to come back for production.”
