Baldwin Bus Driver Calls Crash Tragic

Baldwin Bus Driver Calls Crash Tragic

Posted: Updated:
Spanish Fort, Alabama - This ALDOT camera video was our first glimpse at last week's accident.  Up close with serious damage to one s-u-v and this brat bus, it's a wonder this accident wasn't far worse.

"Seeing him come right at me and not able to get out of the way," says bus driver Ray Mayo.  Ray Mayo was behind the wheel of the BRATS bus.  Today he deals with a lot of pain.

“It's like I'm afraid to   lift half a gallon of orange juice,” says Mayo.  Shawn Wiggins was the driver of the SUV that hit the bus head on, he did not survive.  Mayo says Wiggins final moments haunt him.

“He was doing everything I was doing to try and avoid the accident, I could see him in the driver's seat,” says Mayo.  “Pretty much while I'm sitting around or laying down and my eyes are open I think quite a bit about it.”  Mayo says he's been in transportation for 40 years and this is the first time he's had a head on collision.  He says the impact hit him hard but he still tried to help people out of the wreck.

“My main concern when I come around was making sure the passengers were okay,” says Mayo.  He says his heart goes out to Shawn Wiggins family and the crash has changed his life too.

“Deal with not just our injuries but the death of him, and making me more thankful for what I have and what I do,” says Mayo.
