Local Company Hires Special Needs Employees

Posted: Updated:
Local t-shirt printing company, Inkworks, has hired four new employees to help them fill a huge order for Walmart stores across the country. Inkworks is printing 10,000 shirts a week. These aren't just any employees, though. They are adults with special needs from L'arche Mobile. For years, Inkworks has been printing t-shirts for L'arche's First Light Marathon. Marty O'Malley, the executive director of L'arche approached Inkworks CEO Dennis Wombaugh about hiring L'arche adults with intellectual disabilities. In May, Wombaugh said yes, and the partnership has worked beautifully. Wombaugh says, "Their attention to detail. I cannot emphasize this enough. The shirts are dead on. Everything works out perfectly." He says the L'arche members are some of his best employees. O'Malley says the L'arche adults can't wait to come to work. "People show up every single day, and they don't want to leave. For me, that is a gage that people (L'arche members) take pride in their work. They understand it's a great opportunity for them."

The best part? The L'arche members are enjoying their paycheck! They will receive even more checks for their hard work in the future. The work at Inkworks should continue for the near future, because the company has a contract with Target and Costco for thousands more sports t-shirts.

News 5 wants to salute Inkworks for taking a chance and hiring the L'arche members. It can be very hard to find companies that want to hire special needs adults. Great job Inkworks!
