New 98 Project Continues

New 98 Project Continues

Posted: Updated:
Mobile, AL - This spot where I'm standing on Lott road is where this project is supposed to connect, but it's hard to show progress on something that in the last year has been worked on behind the scenes and on paper. Don Powell with ALDOT shows me their revised plans for the Highway 158 extension, which will eventually connect to the new Highway 98.  In the year since we last looked at this project ALDOT officials say they've held public hearings and fine tuned their designs.

“We have done a tremendous amount of work on this project to make it better for everyone,” said Southwest Region Preconstruction Engineer Don Powell.    When construction does resume they may start on 158 at Schillinger road.  Today Highway 158 just ends into Schillinger with some unfinished asphalt lingering.  The goal is to build just the eastbound lane from Schillinger to Lott then run traffic in both directions.

“Meaning we could put traffic on them and we don't have to wait for other things to come along to use them,” said Powell.  They still need the money to do it.

“There's no guarantee for funding anywhere in the state,” said Powell. The remnants of what was going to be Highway 98 are still around and some are skeptical they'll ever see the project done in their lifetime.

“I doubt it, I'm 65, I've been hearing about this all my life, I've been hearing about the bypass going through here,” said Barbra Amison who lives near the proposed construction route.
