Jones Vote: Third Time the Charm?

Jones Vote: Third Time the Charm?

Posted: Updated:
The MAWSS Board met today at their building on Moffett Road. Six commissioners attended, but there remained an empty seat. It’s that seat that all the squabbling’s been about.

After three weeks of drama and dissension at Government Plaza, the third time is expected to be a charm when Sam Jones name is brought up again Tuesday by Councilman Fred Richardson.

“It’s not over until we vote on Tuesday,” said Richardson.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson ended the council deadlock when he came out Friday for Jones’ nomination

“In my opinion, he’s qualified and if he’s willing to serve he can help unite our city and his nomination should be approved,” said Stimpson.

The mayor’s plea was enough for council members Joel Daves and Gina Gregory to say they’d change their votes. If they hold true to that, Jones will be approved tomorrow.

“I’m glad we can end this saga and we can move forward,” said Richardson.

No MAWSS board members wanted to speak about the situation on camera, leaving that job to their spokesperson.

“Actually the controversy has not been here it’s been down at city hall,” said MAWSS’ Barbara Shaw. “We’re happy to have Sam Jones on the board and we look forward to having him serve.”
