Stimpson: Approve Jones to Water Board

News 5 has learned that at least two Mobile City Council members plan to switch their vote in favor of nominating former Mayor Sam Jones to the city's water board.

Joel Daves and Gina Gregory, who both voted against Jones in his previous two nominations, plan to approve Jones if he's nominated a third time. This comes after Mayor Sandy Stimpson endorsed Jones for the water board seat.

“I am interesting in working with [Stimpson] in doing anything to help move Mobile forward,” Jones told News 5.

A nomination to the MAWSS board requires "supermajority," or five of the seven council votes. A vote from Daves and Gregory, plus the previous votes from Richardson, Manzie and Small would give Jones the five that's required.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson has picked a side in the fight to put his predecessor on the city's water board.

At a press conference on Friday, Stimpson urged the Mobile City Council to approve the nomination of former Mayor Sam Jones to the MAWSS water board.

For weeks there has been an ongoing battle, led by councilman Fred Richardson, to give Jones the seat. However, the latest vote on Jones' nomination failed in a 4 to 3 vote that went along racial lines.
