Lower Water Bills Not Guaranteed in Prichard

Lower Water Bills Not Guaranteed in Prichard

PRICHARD, Ala - Mobile County residents will vote next Tuesday on whether MAWSS should take over the Prichard and Water and Sewer System.

The bill was put forth by Senator Vivian Figures after some citizens in Prichard complained of higher water bills.

In comparison, MAWSS has a minimum water fee of $9.03 which includes 2,500 gallons of water. Prichard residents pay $20.05 for just 2,000 gallons.

The Prichard Water Board says MAWSS has increased its rates over the years and in turn has to pass the cost on to the customer. Prichard residents are also charged a municipal fee of 15 dollars. MAWSS says it will continue to collect the fee if it takes over but can not guarantee rates will immediately decrease.

"What we do feel we offer is responsive customer service, more cost effective operations, and a better opportunity for improved economic development," said Barbara Shaw with MAWSS.

"That bill does not do that. It does not lower the rates or the bills or anything, so I think it's a true injustice not only for the citizens of Prichard and the water board customers and Chickasaw. I think it's an injustice for all of Mobile County because it sets a very bad precedent," said Russell Heidelburg with the Prichard water board.

We asked if there was a municipal fee, MAWSS collects for the City of Mobile and we were told instead of a municipal fee, MAWSS provides a service to provide maintenance of the city's fire hydrants. MAWSS says this was something Prichard was not interested in, so it would continue to collect a municipal fee.
