Bean Poles

Bean Poles

Posted: Updated:
Warm-season gardening in Mobile often means Big Gardening.  Plants grow big here, and many need something to climb on.  That's where Bill Finch of Mobile Botanical Gardens comes in.

A few weeks ago we showed you tomato structures (you can look them up on WKRG.com) and today we're talking about climbing plants-in particular, beans.  Beans need a trellis, but you don't have to buy one.  Make one with stuff you have around the house.  Bill has bamboo and goldenrod and vines, so that's what his structure is made of.  He made a tripod at each end, drove bamboo stakes into the ground in between, and then just wove the green vines and goldenrod in between.  When the vine dries, it locks everything in place!  Bill added some string just for more places the beans could grab.

Building your own gardening structures is fun…and you’ll be proud of the result!

Oh, and Bill added some old Sago palm fronds to keep the cats out of his beans.
