Gun Shoved in Student's Face on the Way to School

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, Ala. - It started off as an ordinary school day for Teedrick Hayes. He gets up, puts on his uniform and walks about 5 blocks to Mae Eanes Middle School, but that normal routine changed once he had a gun pointed in his face.

"Frozen. I was crying out of being scared," he said.

Teedrick left his home at about 7 o'clock this morning. He says as soon at he got to this corner, he saw two men walking towards him.

"Then all of a sudden the one in the gray hoodie he walked up to me and pulled his gun. It was a silver gun. It was also a automatic instead of a revolver. He put it right here in my face and then he showed me how it looked and then he told me to give him the money," he said.

But Teedrick  told them he had no money, and after he was threatened not to tell anyone, the men walked off. That's when he ran home.

"He bust in my back door crying and out of breath, and I asked him what was wrong and he said, 'Mom, I just got robbed. They put a gun to my face.' It's sad because he's not going to have over 50 cents on him number one and number two, a child? A child? Really? said his mother Catherine Jones.

Jones says the neighborhood has its share of home burglaries, and abandoned homes, but this is the first she's heard of a child being targeted.

"For the mothers and parents, get up and walk your children to school. I'm not gone let this happen again and I mean this from the bottom of my heart," she said.
"Do you have a gun?" I asked.
"Yes I do," she replied, "and the bat. I'm going to walk with the bat," she said.

Meanwhile one neighbor has this message for Teedrick, "It's still some good people in this world, but you got bad people too. Just don't let it get you down. Keep your head up," said Waymon Montgomery.

Teedrick says he will keep his head up. He wants to be an architect or engineer when he grows up. Mobile police say they are investigating. Other than knowing the two men are black, they have few details to go on. If anyone has any information about his crime, give Mobile police a call.
