City Approves More Money for Saenger Theater Updates

Posted: Updated:
Mobile's Saenger Theater opened in 1927 - that's 87 years ago. Since then it has undergone numerous updates, and the most recent is a new orchestra shell which is an enormous box that sits inside the stage and helps project sound into the audience.

"It was never really built as a concert hall and the configuration that we are going to move forward with will allow us to utilize it as a true concert hall when we are in residence there," said J.C. Barker.

Baker is the director of artistic operations and says the update is much needed.

"It'll improve the acoustics or cultural experience in the Saenger in a vast way. It's going to be an enormous difference for our patrons," said Baker.

The city approved 95 thousand dollars for the project, while the Mobile Symphony Orchestra raised 250 thousand dollars. A photo of a peeling roof inside the Saenger shows more updates are needed.

"Some cosmetic work that needs to be done. Some basic maintenance work that needs to be done and it's my understanding that we will try to coordinate some of that at the same time as the installation for the shell," said Baker.

Installation will begin late July, hoping to finish in time for the opening of its season in September.
