Chili-Lovers Pack 'The Grounds' Saturday

MOBILE, Alabama -
A pot of chili just might do the trick when it comes to attracting large crowds.

It's all about making sure your team stands out. It's hard to miss the fun costumes and the catchy gimmicks.

"20lbs of snapping turtle in here and there's 20lbs of meat in it," said one cook.

There are plenty of different ingredients in the chili at this year's American Cancer Society Chili Cookoff. Some are more regional than others.

"Alabama Gulf Seafood, that's what's in our chili. We've got 80lbs of shrimp from our friends over at the Alabama Gulf Seafood commission and a lot of gumbo crabs and even a little sausage," said Gene Fox, who cooked at this year's event.

"It's their first year it's the 25th anniversary of the event. Things are going really well. We had a lot of teams come out last night and go ahead and set up," said Scott Tindle, Executive Director of The Grounds.

2014 is the first year the Chili Cookoff has been held at The Grounds. In previous years the event was held in Bienville Square in downtown Mobile.

"I think it's nicer because there's a lot more open space and bigger, and a lot more people and I'm having a good time," said a visitor.

The Grounds estimated 10,000 people would attend this year's event.
