Volunteers Helping to Sign Up Revelers for Health Care

Posted: Updated:
This year at Mardi Gras, you can watch some parades, catch some beads, and get signed up for health care insurance!

The organization Bama Covered has set up a booth on Dauphin Street between Bienville and Cathedral Squares.
There they offer advice and can sign-up people for one-on-one counseling sessions to help navigate the new and often confusing health insurance laws.

More than a half million Alabamians do not have health insurance. They are required to have it by March 31st.

"If you don't sign up, or at least look at your options, or at least file an exemption if you can't find an affordable option, you will pay a fine to the IRS next year," said Bama Covered president Daniel Liss. "What we do is help people figure out what's best for them and their families."

Liss says the large crowds and the cross-section of the population attending Mardi Gras activities are a great opportunity to get people signed up.

"There's a lot of mis-information, a lot of confusion," said Liss. "A lot of people are confused and intimidated by the whole process."

People can give their contact information at the Bama Covered booth on Dauphin Street. They will get a follow-up call for one-on-one, free counseling. Many of the counselors are medical and pre-med students at local universities and colleges.

Liss says he and his organizers canvassed part of Prichard last week and got a tremendous response.

"We found one man Blue Cross-Blue Shield Insurance for $15 a month," said Liss. "It all depends on your family circumstances and income, but there is affordable coverage out there and we want to help people find it."
