Suspect Shot By Police Has Many Run-Ins With The Law

Mobile, AL - Mobile Police shut down the intersection of Old Shell Road and Upham Street again this morning.

This time they reconstructed yesterday's chase and shooting as part of their internal investigation.

I asked for copies of the department's policies on police chases and when to shoot a suspect--police declined saying they were waiting until this investigation is over.  We still don't know exactly what route the suspect took that lead him to stop here.  Some people feel the chase was justified.

“School had just let out I think the cop was in the right to do what he did,” says Fuego Restaurant Bartender Joshua Farrell.  Others didn't want to praise or condemn the police.

“I think it was justified, for shoplifting no, but if the officer felt threatened by him yes," says Barbara Haas with MA Simons.  Ginger Dunaway heard the shots from her yoga studio.  She’s withholding judgment on the chase as well.

You know I really can't say, it depends on the situation,” says Ginger Dunaway with Quiet Mind Massage and Yoga.  The suspect Michael Sims said police shot an unarmed man.  He also said he took a laser ruler from the mall--and this isn't his first run-in with the law.  Since 2006 he's had a new mug shot taken in Mobile County eight times.  He's previously been accused of check fraud, receiving stolen property and--like yesterday--running from police.
