Unhappy Eichold-Mertz Parents Speak Out During Meeting

Posted: Updated:

Parents turned out to voice their concerns tonight about changes at  Eichold-Mertz Elementary School.   The Mobile County School Board plans to move its elementary magnet math and science program to Eichold-Mertz in the fall..and to send Mertz students to five other nearby schools.

Some parents and members of the community feel predominately black schools are being targeted.  Estrella Trotter said,  "They seem to want to take the good black schools and close them down and make them what they want them to be".  Demarcus Johnson Senior has a child who attends Mertz and doesn't feel other schools are as safe, "There's a lot of drug sales and a lot things going around the schools.  So, who would want to take our kids and send them into that type of environment.  You say you want to help our kids with the no child left behind law.  But, you're ultimately hurting our kids".

Superintendent Martha Peek says all of the other schools offer comparable programs to Mertz.  "All of the programs that are here, whether it's special ed, intervention, regular classroom programs..are all available in the other schools..and they're all very good schools.  I want parents to know..that we're going to work with them to accommodate their childrens' needs..and their desires for a good education for their children", said Peek.

Zone hearings will also be held to let parents know where there children will be sent.  Peek says parents will also be told how to apply for magnet schools and hardship transfers.
