Local Air Travel Impacted by Winter Storm

MOBILE, Ala. - Jonathan Byrd is making the best of his wait at Mobile Regional Airport. He's an engineer with the Army and is headed back to Afghanistan, but his flight to Atlanta was canceled.

"I spent about an hour on the phone with the airline and they were able to route me through to Chicago. So I laughed pretty hard because I'm going further North where they know what snow and ice is to avoid Atlanta," said Byrd.

Out of the 25 hundred daily flights in and out of Atlanta, only about 300 got off the ground on Wednesday.

"This is actually the worst winter I've ever experienced," said Shondretta Spears.

Spears is also coping with cancellations to Atlanta. She and her mother are headed to Detroit for a funeral.

"They had to put us on another flight and unfortunately our flight from Atlanta to Detroit was also canceled. So I called Delta and they had to get us on a U.S. Air(ways)flight to Charlotte and and then last night that flight was canceled as well. So we are on our way to Chicago," she said.

Flights out of Mobile Regional go to five other cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, Ft. Worth, Houston and Chicago. Today, all flights to Charlotte were canceled.

Gulf-Port Biloxi Airport had 11 cancellations over the past two days, while Pensacola International Airport had 20. It's estimated that about 8 thousand flights will be canceled across the nation by week's end.
