Forecasters say parts of north Alabama could receive as much as 8 inches of snow on top of 6 inches that already has fallen.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until 6 a.m. Thursday for much of north and north central Alabama.
The weather service says precipitation totals Tuesday range from less than an inch of ice and snow to 6 inches in Marshall and DeKalb counties.
Forecasters say those counties could get another 8 inches of snow by early Thursday.
As much as 2 inches of snow is on the ground around Huntsville, and more is likely.
Birmingham escaped the first round of frozen precipitation, but forecasters say the metro area could get snow and ice in a second wave of weather.
