Blackeyed Peas (Hoppin’ John) for good luck!

4 tablespoons butter

1 diced large onion

4 cloves minced garlic

1 diced large green bell pepper

2 stalks celery diced

4 cups soaked dried black eyed peas

5 cups chicken broth

1 hog jowl

Salt and pepper to taste

Cayenne pepper to taste

*Soak dried peas for 6 hours. Rinse peas put into a pot with all ingredients cook on medium high for 30 minutes reduce heat cook 30 more minutes adding water if needed. Served over rice accompanied by corn bread.

Stewed Cabbage for money!

½ pound bacon coarsely chopped

1 stick butter

.4 cups thinly sliced onions

1 ¼ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

½ teaspoon sugar

3 bay leaves

1 head green cabbage chopped

1 12oz. bottled beer

*Cook the bacon in a large heavy pot over medium heat, until browned and slightly crispy. Add all the ingredients except the cabbage & beer cook until tender about 5 minutes then add the cabbage cook for 5 more minutes stirring constantly then add the bottled beer cook 30 more minutes or until tender.
