Mobile Police Clear 21 of 26 Homicides in 2013

Posted: Updated:

The first violent death of the year came January second. 40-year-old Brent Dove was charged with the murder of 64-year-old Alma Dixon who police say died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Mobile police have been able to clear most of the 26 homicide investigations we've seen this year.

"So our clearance rate is actually 80.8%, almost 81%. Which is extraordinarily good, much higher than the national average," says Ashley Rains with the Mobile Police Department.

Only five cases have gone unsolved. One of those is the murder of Joseph O'Brien, a 48-year-old man with a wife and family and an active member of the Little Flower Catholic Church. O'Brien was shot while riding his bike late one evening. This ghost bicycle was posted in his memory at the crime scene, the corner of Broad Street and Springhill Avenue. In some unsolved cases, an arrest can take awhile since so many things need to be checked off the list before an arrest is made.

"That it's a solid case against a person we've arrested. And then once we feel like we have all that information we can move forward with going to the district attorney's office and then filing charges, getting a warrant," says Rains.

Then comes today's shooting death. 28-year-old Damien Perez Adams was shot several times while waiting in a car outside a house on Jackson Road around 2:20 this morning. While no arrest has been made yet, homicide detectives will put as much work into this case as others that have been closed.

"That's what these detectives do, is they come to work every day to get justice for the people that can't get justice."

If you have any information on Adams' death, you need to call Mobile Police at 251-208-7211.
