RALEIGH, N.C. -

Investigators in Raleigh are building their case against a man said to have forced a minor into prostitution while he profited.

Kewon Perry, 21, was charged with child human trafficking, a misdemeanor probation violation, and robbery with a dangerous weapon in October.

Perry is accused of selling an underage girl for sex out of a hotel room in the 3200 block of Capital Blvd.

In the last week, police have now taken out a search warrant on his cell phone.  On the device, police found an application that creates an alternate phone number from the one that came with the phone.

Police said that alternate phone number matches one they found on online ads on backpage.com, listing that underage girl for sex.

A police affidavit said the tip came from the Polaris Project, a national nonprofit hotline that works to free sex trafficking victims from what some have called modern day slavery.

Michelle Kaufman teaches a class on sex trafficking at North Carolina State University.  Via Skype from Maryland, she told WNCN as many as 200,000 minors nationwide are at risk of being trafficked.

"Individuals who find themselves in that situation are held in what we call debt bondage," Kaufman said, "So, they're trying to pay off a debt or they owe someone money or materials of some sort and are really there indefinitely with no way to escape."

Perry is behind bars awaiting a January court date.
