Credit Card Numbers Stolen In Dawes Area

Credit Card Numbers Stolen In Dawes Area

Posted: Updated:

Missy Mire's credit card information was stolen Tuesday. Her husband's, her sister-in-law's and her friend Sherry's information was also stolen in the past few weeks.

"It's really bad. Both of us put it on Facebook and we probably have 40 friends that have had this happen in the last three weeks," says friend Shelly Frazier.

The last place victims shopped were the Dawes Road Walmart and the Purple Cow gas station. That's where Mire was when her bank called her saying her card number had been used in Spain.

"I really wasn't shocked because I had been hearing it so much with my sister-in-law and Shelly was just telling me Sunday that it happened to her," says Mire.

Mire posted on Facebook to warn others and received comments from at least 15 other people saying the same thing happened to them.

"Not saying that they had anything to do with it at all, it seems to be more somebody just hacking into a computer and getting the information," says Frazier.

The manager of the Purple Cow gas station recently left the job this past week, but the district manager says it was not related to this incident. However one of the victims tells us a clerk there did acknowledge the card numbers were stolen at their location. Meanwhile, law enforcement agents warn against skimmers that are used by crooks on card slots.

"When you go to use your card, look at the machine, make sure nothing looks out of the ordinary, if something's not acting right, if it's wanting you to do it three or four times, move on to another place," says Lt. Paul Burch with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

But carrying cash with you is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you don't want to be caught carrying too much cash, but then it's the only form of payment that isn't directly tied to your bank account the way your card and checks are. Experts say keep a close eye on your bank account as well, especially during this time of year.
