RALEIGH, N.C. -

The City of Raleigh, the City of Durham and Durham County are jointly purchasing 134 acres in Durham County used for watershed protection.

The total purchasing price of the land is $2.3 million with Raleigh paying $250,000, officials said.

The property is located in Durham County off Southview Road. Water from this land drains into Lick Creek, which flows into Falls Lake.

Terms of the land acquisition are:

  • Requiring that not more than 15 acres of the 30 acres of uplands will be used as an active recreational park option by Durham County and the City of Durham. Of the 15 acres, not more than 5 acres can be impervious surface;
  • Requiring a formal agreement that would limit the proposed recreation site and set specific impervious service limits on the proposed recreation area. The agreement would be returned to the City of Raleigh for final review before it is signed; and,
  • Funding from the Upper Neuse Clean Water Initiative (UNCWI) would not be disbursed for the Southview Road land acquisition until the formal agreement is approved and signed by all parties.

Falls Lake is a major source of drinking water for the City of Raleigh and six town that receive water from Raleigh - Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon.
