Be careful with turkey fryers - here's why

CARY, N.C. -

Cary firefighters are reminding us to have a safe holiday season.

On Thursday, they held a demonstration showing the dangers of turkey fryers. They did four things incorrectly on purpose.

They overfilled the pot with oil.

They super-heated it.

They did not use the proper fryer.

And they left the turkey partially thawed.

"Our intent is to make sure this doesn't happen over the holiday season and that's our purpose," said Kathy Ellis, fire education specialist with the Cary Fire Department. "We feel its very important that people be aware of what can happen so they'll be vigilant."

Fire officials made some other points about Christmas tree safety.

Use fresh, green needles that don't fall off when touched, and keep the tree away from any heat source.
