Customer Shoots Suspect During Robbery

MOBILE, Ala. -

It was a robbery with an unsuspected ending after a criminal is shot while attempting to rob this Family Dollar on Stanton Road. The shooter in this case? A customer who was carrying.

"Made some demands for them to quit robbing the store. And began shooting at the suspect," Sgt. Chris Levy.

The robber was hit in the abdomen. Exactly how many times police will not say," said Sgt. Levy.

To give you an idea of the store's location, it sits next door to an elementary school, homes and across from other small businesses.

"I was shocked," said Geneva Chapman.

Chapman is a regular customer...and says she would've done the same thing.

"I do carry a weapon. I do protect myself." "I would've pulled the trigger, yes I would've pulled the trigger," said Chapman.

I'm told while the robbery was in progress, a woman and child were able to run out of the store and across the street to a convenience store. The worker then locked the doors until they felt safe again. The store owner did not want speak on camera for safety reasons, but says he always carries a weapon. Others say it's necessary.

"I used to walk to work and I used to tote a gun. I mean it's all about protecting yourself," said William Noyd.

Mobile police say if you plan to arm yourself, do it legally and know the consequences.

"We always recommend that people have a plan to protect themselves. He was in the limits of the law and he executed his plan. Based on his actions, it saved anyone from getting hurt. What I can tell you is that if you don't want to get shot. Don't commit a robbery," said Sgt. Levy.

While we do not know who this customer is who saved the day, a store employee told me off camera that she's glad he was around.

Police say the robber who was shot is 18 years old, was taken to USA Medical center and is expected to recover. His name has not been released.

A second man was seen running from the store - police are still investigating.
