For this episode, Plain Gardening is on the road at Bellingrath Gardens and Home.
Bellingrath Gardens is known for azaleas in spring, but fall may be the most spectacular season of all. The reason: mums.
Bill Finch of Mobile Botanical Gardens says this is the 50th year of the chrysanthemum display at Bellingrath, so they’re really doing it up big! This is the largest display of cascading mums in America. It’s beautiful anytime in the fall, but the peak of the bloomout is November 10-17…with the yellows, reds, and oranges aglow in the low-angle sunlight.
Bellingrath is also a great place to learn about mums. If you’re interested in having chrysanthemums in your yard, Bill says don’t purchase them in full bloom. If you do, the blooms will only last a week or so. Look for mums where the color is just peeking out from a few buds. Then you’ll have blooms that last a long time.
So, mums can bring out fabulous fall color in your yard. But if you want to see huge cascading mums, Bellingrath is the place and this is the time.
