Tonight was the 70th anniversary celebration of the Mobile Beacon and Alabama Citizen newspaper. News Five's Chief Meteorologist Alan Sealls was the emcee at the Marriott hotel in Mobile. Founded in 1943 by Frank and Lancie Thomas in Tuscaloosa, the Beacon is the oldest African-American newspaper in Alabama.

The scholarship fundraising event featured Xernona Clayton, a civil rights pioneer, history-maker, and humanitarian. Mobile's new mayor and other dignitaries and luminaries attended. Awards were given to representative James Buskey, Major General Gary Cooper, Chief Master Sgt. Leon Moore, Charles Porter, Bennye Reasor, Walter Samples and Aline Woodyard.
