Thieves Target Vehicles at Mobile Elementary School

MOBILE, Ala. -

Broken windows and shattered glass - the result of car break-ins at Old Shell Road Magnet School.

"I felt offended, violated," said Jim Spain.

Jim Spain's SUV was a target.

"Came down to the school to see granddaughter at an awards ceremony and when we returned to the car, we realized the window had been broken in. And the grabbed my wife's purse," he said.

And he wasn't alone. Another woman's SUV was also hit - her purse gone.

Teresa Malone has two children who attend the school.

"Weren't inside but less than 5 minutes . Got settled down and I'm jumping and running. I mean it was that fast. I was like oh my gosh! I came out, and I had to take my radio face out my car and I just knew my car was going to be one of the ones broken into. Thankfully it wasn't," said Malone.

This area has seen it's share of break-ins. I'm told the principal's car was broken into last year during an assembly - and it's not the most targeted area. Mobile police say that would be the shopping plazas along Airport Blvd. between I-65 and Azalea Road.

Of course the obvious way to avoid being a victim is to keep all valuables hidden. For some of us, it's an expensive lesson to learn.

"Actually my wife's purse was sorta under the seat, but they could still see some of it. They've made three transactions and we had those stopped," said Spain.

Mobile police say they have good leads on the case - but so far no arrests have been made. The Mobile County Public School System says it only has funds for 12 resource officers - stationed at the high schools throughout the county.
