Sandy Stimpson Becomes Mobile Mayor

Posted: Updated:
Mobile, AL -

With one hand raised and the other on a bible and his wife and two of 9 grandchildren by his side Sandy Stimpson is sworn in as Mayor of Mobile.

City council members also took the oath of office, and after all was said and done, a few laughs.

"Communications from the mayor," said the city clerk.

"Here," said the mayor.

For this local businessman turned mayor it's a day he won't forget.

"It's kinda hard to explain the range of emotions that you feel because there is so much responsibility that comes. And as the mayor I want to be the mayor of all the people. A lot of opinions about how that should be done and I'm really excited about the feedback," said Mayor Stimpson.

Mayor Stimpson says transparency and getting familiar with the city's budget are top of mind.

"I think the fiscal responsibility and making sure we understand all that is obvious right at the very top and making sure we have a firm understanding of what we are dealing with," he said.

The two newest members of the council say they are ready to support the mayor and take on matters of the city.

"It's the vision of one mobile as you know and also a city that we can be proud to live in .. not that we aren't now a city that's fun to live in and opportunities for all of it's citizens," said Joel Daves.

"Improving our recreational facilities, improving our aging infrastructure, eradicating crime that seems to be prevalent in some of our communities," said Levon Manzie.

The room was filled with family members, friends, city employees, and the general public. With one of the mayor's smallest supporters proud to say the least, "I was really happy," said Annie Jeffery, Mayor Stimpson's Granddaughter.

Mayor Stimpson took about a minute to speak to the media after this morning official oath of office - then headed upstairs to the mayor's chambers with his family. He says he's spent his last few weeks preparing for this day and his first city council meeting tomorrow. And running on a platform of transparency, he also says tomorrow he will take the door off the mayor's office.
