Teachers Get Savvy to Get Classrooms Supplies

MOBILE, Alabama -

It's no secret that school teachers in our area dip into their own pockets each year for supplies for their classrooms. Mobile County teachers only get three hundred dollars for the entire year. So, many teachers in our area are getting savvy about getting supplies. There is a little known website out there, where many local teachers are getting hundreds of dollars of supplies from complete strangers. It's called www.donorschoose.org. The website is run by a non-profit organization, which allows teachers write a description of what supplies they need for their classroom, anything from electronics to desks, to books. Complete strangers donate as little as a dollar.

Teacher Maggie Tait at E.R. Dickson Elementary School posted on the website, that she wanted an iPad for her students. Within days, friends, family, and complete strangers donated hundreds of dollars for her to receive the tablet. She says, "I had a few people from North Carolina fund my project, and it was neat to see people care about learning."

News Five also talked to three other Mobile County teachers. One received seventy-five books for her library, another received three Chrome books, plus a wireless listening system, and another is only two hundred dollars away from having enough funds to buy two Nooks. Hollinger's Island Elementary School Teacher Rochelle Gardner says, teachers have to figure out ways to get their own funding these days. "There are resources out there, and teachers have to take the opportunity to look, or else we have to take it out of our own pocket." Teacher Kevin Robertson adds, "Donors started coming from all over the world. It was amazing."

There are only a handful of Alabama teachers utilizing the website. The only requirement is that the teachers write a couple of paragraphs about how he/she will use the supplies. Again, the website is www.donorschoose.org.
