Jackson County Sheriff Back In Court Monday

PASCAGOULA, Miss. -

A Mississippi judge rules Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd will not have his bond revoked

He admits even though the sheriff is not supposed to have contact with witnesses in the case, in order for the bond to be revoked those contacts had to include an attempt to influence testimony. The judge said that was not met in this case.

The judge says witnesses may have felt intimidated by the contact of the sheriff or those contacting them on behalf of the sheriff but that is not evident.

Byrd was arrested in August and charged with several counts of fraud and embezzlement.

The prosecuting attorney alleges Byrd was intimidating witnesses since the indictment.  Byrd’s lawyers maintain the sheriff was merely talking to people in order to build his own defense.  This is a continuation of a hearing from September 20th.  More witness testimony is expected today.
