City Projects in the Works: District 6

In West Mobile's district 6 represented by city councilwoman Bess Rich, you'll find Mobile's first dog park.

It's four acres of land for dogs to roam, play and just be themselves.

"This is a really nice area, you have places to bring your kids, you have a place for yourself to go and now you have a place to bring your pets," said Angela Enders, visiting the park for the first time.

"It's just an amazing place and we are lucky to have it," said Dillion Thomas.

Rich says one of her major accomplishments in her district is Mobile's only dog park. And it's an ongoing project because the maintenance relies soley on volunteers.

Even though the park resides inside the city's medal of honor park, volunteers raise funds to maintain the lots.

"Well this is a city park, so it makes sense for the city crews to maintain the park - the mowing, the weeding, the edging," said Jane Conkin, who is on the dog park's committee.

Another project in the works for district 6 is a new initiative to join different home owners associations together.

"The whole purpose is to maintain the property value of the neighborhood. We are going to compile a list of service providers. If you say we need a lawn, care person, electrical work, and insurance, I need an attorney," said Allen Marshall, a district 6 resident.

Bess Rich says while city funds may be low, she'll continue to advocate for the people of her district - building the community.

"There is always a lot of stress for the public dollar because every district either has a lot of drainage, my district is no different. What goes on in city government affects your quality of life, and your quality of life makes your community the best it can be

Rich she's also working with private foundation to add more amenities to the Mobile Regional Senior Community Center.
