2 injured in plane crash near Florida tailgaters

GAINESVILLE, FL (WFLA) -

Two people were hospitalized Saturday after their small plane towing a banner crashed near tailgaters gathered for the Florida football game against Arkansas.

The plane's propeller stopped and the pilot jettisoned the banner before trying to make an emergency landing in Flavet Field, said University of Florida Police Chief Linda Stump.

The plane rolled on the ground and bounced into a tree-filled area south of the band shell, Stump said.

Images from the scene show the mangled plane atop an empty, overturned pickup truck.

No injuries on the ground were reported.

"All we heard was the crash. We didn't even hear the plane come in," Katy Crannell, one of tailgaters who witnessed the crash, told The Gainesville Sun (http://bit.ly/1bJzU9y ).

Both people aboard the plane were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Stump said.

Stump said her agency has tried to limit banner-towing planes since 2001, but with no success.

No. 18 Florida is playing its first night game in the Swamp in nearly two years.
