Dog River Marina, Boat Owners Batten Down Hatches

Posted: Updated:

As the wind picks up along Dauphin Island Parkway, folks aren’t too sure what to expect from Tropical Storm Karen somewhere out there in the gulf. But folks at Dog River Marina are battening down the hatches.

Those with the marina hopped into action to make sure all is secure.

“What they’re doing is securing these large boats, they’re putting lines across the canal so if the boats do break free, they’re not going to destroy any of the other boats,” says Jim McNamara with Dog River Marina.

With Karen a tropical storm and not a full blown hurricane as of right now, boat owners are mostly worried about high water levels and a little wind.

“We’re securing sails, we’re not taking them off, some people are. Some people are hauling their boats out. We’re just removing things from the cockpit, anything that could be a flying missile,” says Barbara Samuel.

Samuel is one of many living on their boats here at Dog River Marina, literally riding out the storm.

“No, we’re ok, I mean if we were really afraid and the storm was really going to be bad, we would go somewhere else, but we’re ok,” adds Samuel.

Some small and mid-sized boats have been pulled out onto dry land, folks here are just hoping for the best.
