Orange Beach Readies for Tropical Storm Karen

Posted: Updated:
Tropical Storm Karen is starting to get the attention of folks in Orange Beach but not before another day at the beach.
When the Gulf of Mexico looks like this, locals like Maggie Caver know something tropical is brewing.  "It doesn't look that good but its surf and you don't get surf that often on the gulf coast."
Clouds are building, wind is whipping and soon Tropical Storm Karen will make her presence known, in some form, along Alabama's gulf coast.  "Prepare your own property," says Orange Beach administrator Ken Grimes.  "If that means taking in outdoor lawn furniture, securing the dog house, go ahead and take those precautions cause high winds will be coming in this weekend no matter what the storm does."
Surf conditions may have been good for some but as the day went on considered too dangerous for the general public. Red flags are now flying along all Baldwin county beaches.
"I don't like wind," says Cheryl McCleskey.  "I'm fine till the wind gets here then I start getting a little panicky."
That may be a problem for the Missouri couple enjoying the beach today.  "I want to be back when its windier," says her husband Ed.
As the clouds get thicker and the surf continue to build, not a lot of concern from most folks.  "Not really monitoring it yet," says Chad Autrey from Atlanta, "just making the best of it while we are here." And that's okay. Just don't be caught off guard.  "We don't want folks to over-react but always be prepared for what you may face."
