BayFest Preps Continue, Despite TS in the Gulf

MOBILE, Ala. -

BayFest organizers didn't want to speak on camera today, but do say they are monitoring the weather and will have a weather expert on-hand to make that call to cancel the shows if severe weather strikes.

Despite Tropical Storm Karen having it's eyes set on the Gulf Coast, Bayfest officials are say so far the shows will go on.

Today crews continued their work, building stages from the ground up, and putting together tents. Street lights are being turned off, while emergency medical and Mobile police set up their posts.

"I hope it hold out until Monday. Just have to wait it out," said Christine Smith.

Christine and Crystal Smith already purchased tickets for the event, and say it would take more than just a little rain to keep them from attending.

"It would have to be a hurricane for me not to go. I spent my 60 dollars," laughed Smith.

Like Bayfest officials, some tell me they are playing wait and see, "I'm very excited, but I'm trying to see what this weather is going to do, to see if I'll be able to go," said Cynthia Curry.

While others aren't worried about the weather threat at all, "I don't think it's gonna hit. I'm from Mobile, we'll take hurricane, rains, we'll go right on," said David Myers.

Because Bayfest has it's own vendors, not every downtown business will see a dramatic increase in sales, but the ones that do say they are worried.

"We'll make as much this weekend as on Joe Cain and Fat Tuesday, so that's how important these events are. It seems like we can't catch a break, with Mardi Gras getting rained out this past year and we've dodged all hurricane season long and the one weekend we need it to be beautiful like it was last weekend, it seems like its coming our way, but we are being optimistic and hoping for the best," said Matthew Golden, co-owner of Loda Biergarten.

If you are going to Bayfest, Mobile Police wants to remind you that umbrellas are not allowed inside Bayfest gates.
