Dauphin Island Readies For TS Karen

Dauphin Island, Alabama -

The boats are headed out of Dauphin Island Marina Thursday, but there not out for snapper they're getting out of dodge.

“Today we are planning on moving the boat to west fowl river to be out of harms way. It is better to be safe than sorry,” said Ray Nolan.

It's still uncertain exactly what Tropical Storm Karen will do, but Nolan is certain he is not risking it.

“If you get a direct hit her with these pylons this boat could end up out in the parking lot or out in the wharf and cause a lot of damage to the wharf and to the boat,” said Nolan.

Captain Mike Thierry fishes snapper and this storm could not have come at a worse time at the minimum it’s a couple of thousand dollars out of his pocket.

“We had to take off today, we were able to fish yesterday but already canceled tomorrow. We had a two day trip Saturday and Sunday that is canceled so hopefully Monday will bring some good customers but yeah that is a big effect on us,” said Capt. Thierry.

On the other side of the island the folks at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab are also paying close attention to Karen.

“Getting other parts of the laboratory buttoned down but we have hurricane shutters on most of our dormitory buildings and we are getting our boats moved in the morning,” said Dr. John Dindo.

A little bit of leg work even in uncertainty, but that's just part of living on the gulf.

“Definitely comes with the territory. In 50 years; about every other year you’re going to have to make a run for it. You can't let it get to you because it is just part of it,” said Capt. Thierry.
