Memorial for USA President

MOBILE, Alabama -

Images of Gordon Moulton on a big screen during a public memorial showed glimpses of his accomplishments starting 47 years ago when he arrived at South Alabama as a professor.

"I never met him..but, from what everybody's saying..the vibe I get from everyone else, he had to be a great guy", said South Alabama Jags Wide Receiver Ameriol Finley.  Students didn't have to meet President Moulton to feel his passion for growing the university.
In their bright red jerseys, players represented the football program he started at South.  But, there's much more to his legacy according to friend and neighbor, Robert Edington, "It'll be increasing the academic standards noticeably out here at South Alabama.  Not that they weren't good, but, he just made it better".

USA Acting President, Dr. John Smith remembers Moulton as "A man of integrity.  He demonstrated that on a regular basis, and to me that was so important to see that in a leader...and to be able to be mentored by him".

Moulton became president in 1998. He and his wife, Geri, are both known for their kindess and being hands on with students.  Like other members of The Student Government Association,  pre-med Junior Justine Harris has eaten at their home.
The memorial service moved her to tears.  "You know..being in there..that's where we'd be for graduation and you know I never thought he'd never be at my graduation.  You know, it's just kind of sad", said Harris.

Moulton arrived at South Alabama when the school was just three years old.  He was the university's longest serving employee.
