Tampa Bay area Goodwill surveillance upholds privacy

BRANDON FL (WFLA) -

In a Goodwill superstore dressing room with her 10-year-old daughter, Tenema Ray was startled to see a surveillance camera a bit too close for comfort.

"I'm standing by the wall and I'm looking up and Lord can this camera see me? I feel like it can see a lot of my body," said Ray.

Ray was at the Goodwill Superstore on East Brandon Boulevard in Brandon. Cell phone photos show the camera hangs from the ceiling, level with the gap above the dressing room door.

"It made me feel violated and scared," said Ray.

But when she went to the store manager, she received no explanation. So she filed a report with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and called Eight on Your Side.

Eight on Your Side took her concerns to the Goodwill Industries-Suncoast Headquarters in St. Petersburg. Chris Ward, director of marketing, explained that the cameras are fixed and provide a broad view of the outside of the dressing rooms. She showed a Channel 8 reporter the live feed of all the camera views from inside the Brandon store, and none showed the inside of the dressing rooms with the door closed.

"She should be reassured her privacy is not being violated," said Ward.

HCSO investigators also took a look at the camera shots and determined they did not violate state privacy and video-recording laws.
