Ala. Farmers Eligible for Loans After Wet Summer

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Farmers in 50 Alabama counties are eligible for federal emergency loans because of the unusually wet summer. 

The Anniston Star reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved the assistance at the request of the state.

The heaviest rains occurred from June through August. Some areas received more than twice as much precipitation this year as during the same period last year, making it tough to grow crops. 

Hassey Brooks of the Alabama Department of Agriculture says cotton, soybeans, hay and peanuts were among the biggest losses for Alabama farmers during the growing season.

The federal decision means farmers can apply for low-interest loans in all but 17 Alabama counties.
