3rd Annual Tunnel To Towers Run

3rd Annual Tunnel To Towers Run

MOBILE, Alabama -
Hundreds of runners traveled from the Battleship, through the Bankhead Tunnel and into downtown Mobile Sunday morning for a good cause.

"Honoring all the people that were killed on September 11th and honoring all of the veterans that gave the ultimate sacrifice and were wounded. We're trying to raise money for them," said a runner.

It's the 3rd year for the Tunnel To Towers run in the Port City. Each year the runners come from all over the country to support the cause.

"9/11 was a tragedy. After that I joined the marines to serve and this run just helps raise money for fallen heroes and the families of those who have lost heroes. Anything you can do to support. We just came out here to run it," said a runner.

On September 11, 2001 New York City Firefighter Stephen Siller responded to the World Trade Center. The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was closed to traffic. Siller, carrying 60 lbs of gear, ran through the tunnel and towards the tower, sacrificing his own life to save others.

Now, 10 cities across the country host Tunnel To Tower runs each year.

"Everyone was affected by 9/11 in a bad way, but it brought us closer. My brother's friend back home, he went overseas after, and was killed in Iraq in 2005 and it's still heavy on our hearts. I wanted to honor him today," said a runner.

Robert Kichler is a high school senior who borrowed gear from the Semmes Volunteer Fire Department this year to run in the race. He's not a firefighter, but he wanted to show his appreciate for those who serve.

"Stephen Siller was in full fire gear when he did this and this is to retrace his steps and I thought what better way to get some fire gear and do it," he said.
