Auburn Cuts Ribbon on Hubbard Research Center

Posted: Updated:
AUBURN, Alabama - Auburn University is now home to the Mike Hubbard Center for Advanced Science, Innovation and Commerce.

University officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the center Friday. It is designed to foster multidisciplinary research and generate economic development. It includes 20 high-tech labs and a super computer. Outside are two five-ton cranes for biofuels work.

Construction of the $28.8 million center began in late 2011. University officials said the building's namesake, House Speaker Mike Hubbard of Auburn, helped secure $14.1 million in state funds to go with a federal grant of $14.5 million. Auburn University and the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station provided the remaining funds, and they will fund the operation of the center.

Hubbard said the new center will expand Auburn's reputation for research.
