DA Moves to Have Sheriff's Bond Revoked

PASCAGOULA, Miss. -

Prosecutors have filed documents accusing Sheriff Mike Byrd of intimidating witnesses, specifically three Jackson County Sheriff's deputies who testified before the grand jury that indicted Byrd on Aug. 30.

The charges in the 31 count criminal indictment include fraud, extortion, embezzlement and perjury.

The motion filed Tuesday by District Attorney Tony Lawrence asks a circuit judge to revoke Byrd's bond. If a judge agrees, Byrd would be taken to jail.

Byrd paid a $31,000 bond the day he was arrested. Typically bond is set, allowing the accused to stay out of jail until trial and to ensure they show up in court.

A status hearing in Byrd's criminal case is scheduled for Sept. 20 in Pascagoula.

Byrd is serving his fourth term as sheriff in Jackson County.
