Lovebugs are Back in Full Force

Lovebugs are Back in Full Force

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, Ala. -

They are annoying, sticky and can be down right nasty.

"They tend to get in your way, kinda aggravating," said Orlando Bailey with Bebo's Carwash.

"They are a nuisance, and they fly in your face and what have you," said Allan Wildhaber.

Love bug season has arrived. Now practically every vehicle is covered with them, forcing drivers to pay a few more bucks to get them removed.

"The bugs are pretty prevalent this year," said Doug Clyce, owner of Bebo's Service Station.

Clyce says he's already seeing a significant increase in business even though the love bug season has just begun.

"We're seeing a lot more now than what we normally do. I will say we went about 3 years without really seeing lovebugs," he said.

For Kim Robbins, a real estate agent, keeping her car clean has become a hassle.

"you don't want to show up with a client and stuff and you have bugs all over your car. Oh, it's been horrendous. they are all over the place. You can't walk, they are all over the cars. I'm here today to get my car washed because of it," she told me.

Workers are soaking and scrubbing and waxing and buffing the bugs off. Once the love bugs are smashed on your car, it's important not to leave them there for too long, because they are acidic and will eat through your paint.

"If you leave them on a week or two, you can expect to have some spots on your paint once you taken them off. So use something that will re-hydrate them, remove them and out a coat of wax on the front of your car, something with some teflon, or silicon on the back and the front of your car, that way you keep them from sticking so much," said Clyce.

And while the lovebug's purpose remains questionable for some, "I guess for food for the birds of something," said one driver.

Keep in mind their visit will last for about a month.
Lovebugs generally take emerge in the spring and again in late summer, or early fall and will last about to weeks.

Bebo's Service station is offering a full wash, wax and interior cleaning special for $39.99.

The location on Moffett Rd. has a station set up for bug removal.
